Sustainable operations

As one of the world’s largest dairy producers, we believe our nutritious dairy products contribute to a better future for generations to come, but we also have a responsibility to reduce our climate impact.

That’s why we aim to reach Carbon Net Zero in all of our operations globally, from our sites to our trucks, by 2050.

Three ways we’re reducing our carbon footprint…

Renewable energy at sites and offices
Renewable energy at sites and offices

In 2022, 61% of our power in Europe came from renewable energy sources, but we’re planning on increasing that figure drastically in the coming years. Before 2030 we aim to convert to 100% renewable electricity across all our production sites in Europe.

Fossil free logistics
Fossil free logistics

We’re switching more and more of our fossil fuel trucks to fossil-free alternatives like trucks fuelled by biodiesel, biogas and electricity. By 2030, we want our entire truck fleet in Europe to run on renewable fuels.

Investing in the future
Investing in the future

We’re always looking for new technology and solutions that can reduce our carbon footprint. That’s why we invest in research projects and collaborate closely with our suppliers and stakeholders in the search for greener solutions.

Committed to limiting global warming to 1.5°C

In December 2021, we doubled our climate target for operations including owned logistics from 30 to 63 per cent. This target has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative as consistent with reductions required in scopes 1 and 2 to keep global warming to 1.5°C. The most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement.

Powering sites and offices with energy from our farmers

24% of Arla’s farmer owners produce green energy like biogas or wind energy at their farms. Since May 2021, Arla have offered farmers to buy that energy through green electricity certificates.

Reducing waste in our production

We can reduce the climate footprint in our production by wasting as few of our resources as possible. We are aiming towards halving the food waste in our operations from 2015 to 2030. By the end of 2020, we had almost made it halfway towards that goal by reducing waste from 2,64% of our raw materials to 2%.

100% fossil free fuel for trucks in Sweden

Our logistics in Sweden have been frontrunners in transitioning to fossil free fuel. In 2018 they met the impressive milestone of converting every single truck to green energy sources like biodiesel and biogas.

Our work towards achieving carbon net zero operations, supports SDGs

  • No. 7 - Affordable & Clean Energy by switching to renewable sources of energy across our value chain.
  • No. 12 - Responsible Consumption & Production by achieving a Carbon Net Zero supply chain by 2050 and reducing CO2 by 30% by 2030 from 2015.
  • No. 17 - Partnership for the Goals by working with our suppliers and local partners across our supply chain.

Arla's Climate Ambition

Our climate ambition is to become carbon net zero by 2050. On the road to net zero emissions, we are committed to reducing CO2e emissions significantly by 2030:
